EXTRA: Don’t believe what the label says… A list of recordings not attributed to Ray Conniff and errors on the record labels.
In the beginning of his career as an orchestra leader for Columbia Records, Ray Conniff backed quite a few singing artists and contributed to their success by means of his arrangements as well as the backings he provided. In 1955, Ray got his first chance to try out his sure-fire theory of arranging. The lucky record was Don Cherry's "Band Of Gold". It became a runaway hit. This spurned a series of Conniff-arranged Columbia recording sessions, which resulted in many hit records. Among them were Johnnie Ray's "Just Walking In The Rain", Frankie Laine's "Moonlight Gambler", Guy Mitchell's "Singing The Blues" and Marty Robbins' "A White Sport Coat". Ray was also responsible for the brilliant arrangements of Johnny Mathis' "Chances Are", "Wonderful, Wonderful", and "It's Not For Me To Say". For details please click here and / or study “The Collector’s Guide to the Works of Ray Conniff”, which can be downloaded as a pdf-file by clicking here. In the early 80s, Ray Conniff did a complete album with Country singers, such as Marty Robbins, Charlie Rich and others. For details, please click here. This album was released on the Collectables label in 2008 with the inclusion of quite a few previously unreleased tracks (e.g. one by Tammy Wynette). For details click here. Ray Conniff also wrote quite a few floor arrangements for other artists. Thanks to the Internet / YouTube, some of these can be watched. Just click on the screenshots.
